Your privacy while using the MnPALS Online Catalog is an important element of your intellectual and academic freedom. MnPALS is supported in protecting your privacy by national and state-level laws.

Information Collected and Stored Automatically

We gather and store certain information about the users of MnPALS in order to better understand and meet the needs of our users, monitor system performance, assess technical design requirements, and to design our site to support our users’ needs. We only analyze the above information in aggregate; we cannot and do not use the information in our server logs to identify an individual.

User data collected includes:

  • The IP address from which you access our website
  • The date and time you visit our site
  • The web pages on our site that you visit

The session logs that contain this data are retained unaltered for a month and then are over-written by the next month’s logs.

If you wish to visit our site anonymously, there are services for this available on the internet. For more information, search for “anonymous web surfing” using your favorite internet search engine or directory.


A “cookie” is information stored on your computer by a web server and used to customize your web service in some way. MnPALS does not use cookie technology and does not place cookies on the workstations of our users, nor do we plan to do so.

However, "cookie" technology may be used to access other resources provided to you by your library. Even though MnPALS doesn't use cookies, you may need to adjust your cookie and/or privacy settings in order to use other library resources.

Personally Identifiable Information

Users who choose to provide us with personal information such as including an email address in a feedback or by making use of My Bookbag, etc., should know that access to this information is restricted to library staff that needs to use it in the normal course of library business. This information is never used for commercial marketing purposes and it will never be revealed to any third party except by such process, order, or subpoena authorized by national, state, or local law.

MnPALS links out to other sites and services and is not responsible for the privacy or integrity of any data or personal information that you submit on another website. You must read the privacy statements at these external sites to learn of their privacy policies.

To guard against unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and promote the correct use of information, we have put in place physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.

However, while we consider these measures reasonable, no assurance can be given that they will always and in all cases prevent or protect against invalid access or improper activity, and any expectation or warranty of unassailable site security is expressly disclaimed.
