RIPL: Reference & Instruction Community of Interest

We will be discussing anti-racist and equity-minded reference and instruction services.  To set the stage for the discussion, please take a look at the below readings and discussion questions:

Anti-Racist Pedagogy in Action: First Steps by the Columbia Center for Teaching and Learning

Conducting Research Through an Anti-Racism Lens (Research Guide) by Shanda Hunt and Amy Riegelman at the U of MN Libraries

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why are we interested in Anti-Racism at our Libraries or Schools, do you see Anti-Racist Action as something that will help students/patrons?
  2. How far are you in your journey to becoming an Anti-Racist Librarian working in an Anti-Racist Library, do you have institutional support to do this work?
  3. Is your library or school engaged in discussion about Equity or Anti-Racism, what do those conversations look like?  What is asked of your library or of librarians?
  4. What is your library or school doing about Equity? Are students/patrons being centered in equity work? Are employees being supported by “higher-ups” to do equity work?
  5. The University of Minnesota created a LibGuide that helps library researchers understand how racism impacts research: Conducting Research through an Anti-Racism Lens. What did you notice in this LibGuide? Do you think this LibGuide is part of a larger effort to practice Anti-Racist Librarianship?
  6. Continuing our discussion of the U of M Anti-Racist Research Guide, how does this approach to research compare to how you currently teach research?  Is there anything from the Anti-Racist Research Guide you might use, either entirely or in part? Do you think learning about Anti-Racist Research benefits students of color, white students, or students with other marginalized identities?
  7. What do you think RIPL can do to support Anti-Racist or Equity work in our consortium? Are there particular topics that could help educate librarians with reading and discussion: implicit bias, racial bias, and microaggressions, allyship, anti-racist pedagogy, culturally responsive pedagogy, social justice pedagogy, equity frameworks for change, research and anti-racism, research and indigenous methodology, research and anti-oppressive methodology, etc.?
