1. Welcome & Introductions
2. Selection of a Recorder – Pete McDonnell volunteered to take minutes.
Libraries convened by library type to elect new representatives. User Groups can decide how to organize their representation. Motion to allow Technical Colleges, Consolidated (Community and Technical Colleges), and Community Colleges to elect up to three (3) representatives to represent that group. Motion carried.
Private Colleges and Universities: Erika Rux was nominated in absentia and later agreed to represent until March 2012; Theresa Borchert agreed to represent for the remainder of the year
Technical, Consolidated, and Community Colleges: Michael Kirby, Dakota County TC (Michael agreed to serve as Convener of the Systems group—Thanks, Michael!)
Dan fielded questions and gave an update on the report. Since the Version 20 upgrade, there were problems with barcodes not showing up or printing out in ILL (and sometimes in the Circ module). Most of these were due to problems with Windows 7--barcode fonts don’t appear. Most issues have been fixed. Also, Dan recommends not moving to Internet Explorer 9 for Aleph workstations; it can cause issues with barcodes.
6. Subsystem Version 20 Update
Version 21 will be an upgrade; no major changes foreseen. PALS will be loading and migrating v.21 data on the test server in January, 2012. Though a date for the upgrade to Version 21 can’t be set yet without testing, March and April have worked in the past. PALS has to wait and see how the testing goes, but for now the target for the upgrade will be April, 2012, with a backup date of the end of August, 2012. As in past upgrades, down-time will probably be over a weekend when use is low. Al said that an Oracle upgrade is also involved, so we may have to wait and see how long the upgrade will actually take.
7. Reports Work Group report - Randi Madisen (CEN)
The charge of the work group is to handle suggestions for new and existing reports, and to decide to recommend (or not) these changes to the PALS office for implementation. The Reports Work Group is also seeking new members; please contact a member of the work group if you are interested. The group has been meeting bi-monthly by conference call, and recently provided a conference call training for MnPALS libraries on reports for the NCES/IPEDS/Academic Library Survey. There are several great new reports that have been implemented, or are in the works. A suggestion was made to facilitate generating statistics for such things as the Academic Library Survey and ACRL surveys, by scheduling a report (count of bib records and items by collection) in the Joblist on the PALS server. Libraries could then pull the statistics at the end of the fiscal year (or whenever it might be scheduled). Another suggestion was made to schedule the conference call on Aleph data for the ALS survey earlier in the academic year.
8. Spring 2012 Workday Planning
Proposed date: April, 2012. Location: 7700 France Ave. South (MSU-Mankato satellite location in Edina). Michael Kirby will send out a Doodle poll in January to firm up time and place details.
Ideas for sessions: PALSconnect Linker setup for PubMed; 1 to 2 hour refresher Systems training for libraries; How to set up links to your mobile friendly site; How libraries are doing Circulation services, reports, and notices; Electronic Resource Management (ERM) systems. Please post other ideas to the Systems board on the PALS Forums.
9. Meeting adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
