1) Web Scale Discovery
Presenters: Jennifer DeJonghe and Michelle Filkins, Metropolitan State University
Do discovery tools foster interdisciplinary, serendipity, and critical thinking? Do they help our users find the high quality content in our collections? Librarians at Metropolitan State University implemented a Web-Scale Discovery tool in 2012. In this session we will discuss how this is transforming the way we approach reference and instruction as we shift from teaching about tools to a greater emphasis on source selection and evaluation.
Presenters: Bobby Bothmann, Minnesota State University, Mankato; Robin Horowitz, Minnesota State Law Library Slides: RDA in the Catalog REF.pdf
In this session, Bobby and Robin will talk about and demonstrate the changes in RDA that affect record display in the OPAC/MnPALS Plus, and then lead a discussion on how, in general, RDA may affect reference and instruction services.
Based on a survey of MnSCU institutions using the St. Cloud State University-hosted LibData system, a migration project from LibData to SubjectsPlus has begun. SubjectsPlus is an open-source product that incorporates many features available with the commercial LibGuides product. Come see this product in action and learn about St. Cloud State University's plans for migration as well as how you can implement SubjectsPlus at your own institution.
2) Online Library Instruction
Panelists: Travis Dolence, Minnesota State University Moorhead; Jennie Simning, Hennepin Technical College; Jen Ashkenazi, Normandale Community College; Kimberly Sy, Normandale Community College
There are a variety of ways library instruction can be incorporated into the online classroom: from creating tutorials to share and post, to offering library webinars for online students, to embedding a librarian into the online course itself. This session will feature a panel of librarians who will speak about their experiences and best practices in online library instruction. Time will be available for questions or to share your own experiences.
