Report to the Cataloging User Group March 22, 2001
By Edward Swanson
The Minitex/LDS Joint Standards Task Force Report from Sub-Group on Authority Control was distributed. The report has been accepted. The work is a bit behind, but expected to be completed by the end of summer. New members are to be appointed, including a convener.
Move MARC Record (MMR) handout was distributed. This capability is allowed if the record is already in your catalog and your holdings are in OCLC. For example, it may be used to replace your earlier brief record with a more complete, fuller record.
Change of Afro- to African American. PALS will run the annual subject heading report this spring. This process will flip these.
Wade Giles to Pinyin. This is presently under discussion.
NetLibrary Carla Dewey Urban distributed a handout entitled "netLibrary MARC Record Options" dated Mar. 7, 2001 and discussed three options:
NetLibrary bibliographic records from netLibrary from Minitex (free)
Copy catalog these titles one-by-one on OCLC
Minitex Collection set of netLibrary bibliographic records from OCLC (purchased by Minitex and available to individual libraries for $100). This option will automatically set your holdings for these titles on OCLC.
Both sets of records (a + c) are available now for the copyrighted titles (~1600). NetLibrary has informed Minitex that the bibliographic records for the public domain set are expected to be available in May 2001.
Note that as title are added and the shared collection set of ebooks grows, there will be supplemental files of bibliographic records available, probably monthly, for those added titles. These will be available from Minitex both as option a and option c (above).
Mike Barnett told us that the bibliographic records from netLibrary (option a) should de-dup on the OCLC bibliographic records for these titles which are already in the PALS database (as cataloged by MSU, Mankato).
There are a motion to request that PALS extend the deadline for libraries to chose the netLibrary bibliographic record option and delay the loading of records until April 6, 2001. Motion carried.
Other non-OCLC records. This topic will be discussed again at the DBQM TF May 3, 2001 meeting.
MARC Holding fields in the bibliographic record. It is currently not possible to include these.
Extend indexing of $t (with the exception of 773 $t). Discussion continues at DBQM TF May 3, 2001 meeting.
