Report to the Cataloging User Group April 26, 2004
By Edward Swanson
The task force is putting together an instructional piece on the importance of entering a K level record on OCLC instead of an I level in those cases where the cataloger does not feel comfortable with inputting more than the minimal elements required in a K level record. It is important to do this because it allows other libraries to add information to the record then upgrade the level to I.
The group is working with the University to develop a policy on the 655 genre terms setting to define the source of the term.
Another item the group is working on is indexing of the holdings record.
The group continues to discuss the input and display of a gift note. While in most cases this note belongs in the holding record some institutions are interested in having it display in the bib record.
The group recommended that the default value for the Encoding level in the holdings record be changed from 1 to 2.
