Technical Services Report to User Groups: Spring 2007

System Operations

  • Completed the upgrade to version 17 in January.
  • Oracle was upgraded to 9i and tuned for version 17.
  • Implemented fixed field indexing recommended by the Indexing Task Force.
  • Adjacency searching was turned off, which produced unexpected results because the documentation was incorrect. The only way to fix the problem is to re-index the keywords which will make the system unavailable for three to four days.
  • Set up server and software to run the new PALS website.
  • Ongoing system maintenance, security patches, and upgrades.

Aleph

Task Forces, Presentations, Committees

  • Attended Authorities Task Force web meetings.
  • Attended Validation Task Force web meetings
  • Attending the Indexing Task Force web meetings.
  • Attending the Reports Group meetings.
  • Presented several different sessions at the Second Annual Ex Libris Regional conference in Minneapolis.
  • Al volunteered to serve as the technical liaison for the Discovery Tool Task Force.

Enhancements, Fixes, Miscellaneous

  • Fixed the problem with Java applets and LibProxy.
  • Completed global changes as requested by libraries.
  • Preparing to install Wiki software.
  • Continuing to report ILL and Aleph version 17 software problems to Ex Libris.
  • Ongoing installation of service packs on Lute and Harp for version 17 and ILL.

Record Loads

  • Performing weekly updates to the Authorities database on Harp.
  • Marcive record loading was suspended in December after it was discovered that the loader was still creating duplicate records. A problem report was submitted to Ex Libris. We are currently testing the Marcive loader.
  • Loaded Netlibrary 2005 Shared Reference collection for Riverland Community College.
  • Loaded records for two new sublibraries of Rasmussen College.

Reports

  • Enhanced the cir-30 report and placed it in production. An additional retrieval option by collection and two fields were added to the report.
  • Created an Empty ILL report, pals-20 and placed it in the Circulation Services Menu.
  • Created reports to count circulation events by call number and patron records that have ILL loans without ILL items.
  • Fixed p-acq-25 to run in version 17.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

  • Completed setup and testing of Blackwell’s Book Services Collection Manager in version 15.5 and version 17.
  • A problem report was submitted to Ex Libris about the discounts when using Collection Manager and encumbrances not being created.
  • Fixed the EDI functionality in version 17 for all vendors that were previously set up in version 15.5.

Version 17 and Oracle

  • Refreshed the Authorities database from the PALS Authorities database in version 17.
  • Added an index for local notes (599 a, m ,n) called WLN.
  • Fixed the PLIF loader to work correctly in version 17.
  • Modified and reinstated background processing jobs that perform system cleanup for version 17.
  • Completed setup for summary holdings functionality in version 17.
  • Selected approximately 174,000 patron records to delete, but p-cir-77 is not working. A problem report was submitted to Ex Libris.
  • Upgraded Oracle to the latest 9i version and installed the latest security patches.

Version 18 and Oracle

  • Gathering system specifications for version 18.
  • Preparing to upgrade to Solaris 10 and Oracle 10G for version 18.

PALS

  • Access to the mainframe was turned off in October, 2006.
  • The mainframe is still running for the registration data. It will be permanently shut down once the UNIX server is set up to receive the registration data and the libraries have been notified of the change.
