Technical Services Report September 2006

Development and Systems News
  • WebPALS was shut down. Its life ended peacefully: 8/15/1996 -- 8/24/2006.
  • Luda Lindahl joined the PALS technical staff on September 12th. She will be working with the Reports Group to develop reports. Welcome Luda!
  • Three sets of NetLibrary records were loaded on Harp for libraries that subscribed to the records.

Work in Progress
  • Ongoing software fixes to reported system problems.
  • Ongoing system maintenance and upgrades.
  • Ongoing installation of service packs on Lute for version 15.5. ILL service packs are being installed on both Lute and Harp.
  • Attending upgrade to version 17 project planning meetings.
  • Attending Indexing Task Force meetings.
  • Continuing to work with the UNIX system monitoring software.
  • Continuing to perform weekly updates to the Authorities database on Harp.
  • Continuing to report ILL software problems to Ex Libris and install service packs for ILL.
  • The Authority file from PALS was extracted and moved to Lute to refresh the Authority database in Aleph version 17. It was loaded and indexed. It will be refreshed from the PALS Authority database one more time in the version 17 region.
  • Waiting for p_manage_18_p (record loader using parallel processes), p_file_99 (Marcive), and "golem" fixes from Ex Libris.
  • Waiting to hear from Baker and Taylor to enable MWW to order from two accounts.
  • Waiting to hear from Ex Libris about the SIs submitted from EDI claims testing with EBSCO.
  • Working with MSU on problems reported while testing Blackwell's Book Services Collection Manager.
  • The problem with remote access to NetLibrary records in Aleph from LibProxy has been fixed. Will be working with Mary Ann to advise the libraries that have NetLibrary records and are using LibProxy to verify it is correctly working.
  • Working on problems with LibProxy and Java Applets.
  • Set up a UNIX workstation for Luda.
  • Set up additional ILL units on Harp.
  • Modified the ue_17 watcher program to monitor the ue_17 process and to send an email whenever the process aborts or is spinning.
  • ue_17 is causing more problems than usual recently. It aborted three times within a recent 24 hour period. Added more details about the problem to the ongoing SI.
  • Continuing to work on the Aleph 17 tables set up.
  • Created and moved the Aleph 17 form_eng directory of files to all of the ADMS.
  • Encountered a limit problem when running p_manage_32 to create the logical bases. A workaround was created to get the last 172 logical bases loaded and a SI was created about the problem.
  • Indexing has been completed in the Aleph 17 region, but p_union_02 needs to be rerun because of ORACLE errors and missing tables. It creates the union view and populates the z120 table that de-dups records. The job will be restarted on 9/19/06 at 5:00 pm and runs for approximately 36 hours.
  • Working on creating a base set of HTML documents in the Aleph 17 region with the bulk of the local modifications applied to the documents. The base set from version 15 to version 16 has been completed, and the version 16 to version 17 base set is approximately ¾ done. We still need to figure out where some of the local modifications in files that have been deleted in version 17 need to go and then the base set of HTML documents needs to be copied to all of the ADMs and ADM customization needs to be applied.
  • Work on the file transfer from the business office and reformatting it for input to Aleph remains to be done.
