Version 18 Upgrade Timing

During the Spring User Group meetings, we were asked to investigate what it would take to upgrade to version 18.

We have analyzed the requirements for version 18. The following factors were key issues:

Version 17 requires Oracle 9i and version 18 requires Oracle version 10. We use Oracle version 8i with version 15.5, so it would have required two upgrades in the Oracle level, We would also need to export and import data between version 15.5 and version 17, and then again between version 17 and version 18 due to the different Oracle versions.. rating system. An upgrade to the operating system would require down time on lute and harp, which would interfere with the version 17 upgrade.
Conversion scripts for moving ILL from the Web version to the client version were not available. The scripts are just now becoming available and the University of Minnesota and MINITEX expect to begin working with the scripts this month.

Based on these factors and the experience we now have with upgrading from version 15.5 to version 17, we decided to get version 17 into production before moving to version 18. We do plan to have version 18 installed on the test server early in 2007, and will make the upgrade to version 18 a high priority.
