Aleph version 19 upgrade: February 11, 2009 update

Work continues on the upgrade to Aleph version 19. We are on track for a late March, 2009 production date. After the consortium libraries have had a chance to work with version 19, a definite go-live date will be set. We will particularly be looking at the results of the Course Reserves data review.

Following is an update on the work completed, in progress, and coming up.

Completed

  • Version 19 is installed on the test server, and is called dev19.
  • Data from the production Aleph server has been loaded to dev19 and we have completed two test upgrades on the development server.
  • Service packs have been installed on dev19 so that it is up to date through December, 2008 (next service pack expected in March).
  • The version 19 production zone has been created.
  • The Aleph version 19 Release Notes are now available on the PALS web site at http://www.mnpals.org/aleph/syslibs/19docs/19release-all.pdf.
  • The information sessions covering the changes in version 19 for the various Aleph modules will be held Feb. 18 – March 6. Registration is now open for these sessions at http://www.abcsignup.com/view/view_month.aspx?as=16&aid=PALS&wp=112 . The deadline for Interlibrary Loan, Acquisitions/Serials, Circulation, Systems, and Cataloging is Monday, Feb. 16. The registration deadline for the Web OPAC session is Monday, Feb. 23.
  • The Course Reserves web training sessions have been scheduled for March 5, 12, and 18. Registration is now open for these sessions at http://www.abcsignup.com/view/view_month.aspx?as=16&aid=PALS&wp=112 . The deadline is Monday, March 2.

This week

  • The version 19 clients have been built and will be made available to the libraries. Watch for the announcement.
  • The Course Reserves recorded session to prepare library staff for Course Reserves data review has been completed and will be made available. Watch for the announcement and information about setting up privileges.
  • Look for a document describing the new staff permissions functionality in version 19.

In progress

  • The PALS staff is testing version 19.
  • Preparations for the information sessions are underway. The support and training staff are putting the final touches on the Version 19 information session handouts. They will be available within a few days.
  • The OPAC customizations and custom services and reports are being incorporated.
  • An STP Checklist document is being prepared.

Coming up

  • Libraries begin testing version 19 after they install the staff client. The client will be made available this week.
  • The information sessions will be held Feb. 18 – March 6. The Course Reserves web training sessions will be held March 5-18. See above for registration information.
  • The use of the ‘harp’ domain name for the production server will be discontinued in March. We will use the generic name ‘aleph’ so that it is not dependent on the physical server on which it resides. See the announcement that was sent on January 15 for details.
  • The production server will be down for a few hours on a Saturday on the weekend that we do the switch over. The web OPAC and MnPALS Plus will be redirected to dev18 during this time. This is tentatively planned for March 21, but is contingent on the testing that the libraries will do over the next two weeks.
